Quit & Save is a free set of calculators that work out quit smoking savings, cigarette costs, and quit drinking savings.
Every calculation runs in your browser, and we publish our formulas and assumptions openly.
What is Quit & Save
Quit & Save (quit.moneycomon.com) is a free set of tools that helps anyone quitting or cutting back on smoking and drinking see the savings and health benefits as real numbers. By converting a vague resolution into concrete dollars and calories, it gives you the motivation to start and keep quitting.
Operating principles (E-E-A-T)
- Experience - we put the real question people ask, "how much will I save if I quit," at the center, showing savings, cigarettes not smoked, and calories cut item by item.
- Expertise - we calculate using widely accepted figures: 20 cigarettes per pack, about $8 per pack, roughly 7 kcal per gram of alcohol, and about 3,500 kcal per pound of body fat.
- Authoritativeness - the post-quit health recovery timeline follows the general pattern compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO) and official health authorities.
- Trustworthiness - we never hide our formulas and assumptions, and we clearly flag estimates and for-fun figures. Your inputs are never collected or stored.
Data and assumptions
Each calculator uses the following bases. Prices and calories vary by person, brand, and menu, so we keep them as input fields and editable constants.
- 1 pack = 20 cigarettes; a typical US pack about $8 (variable)
- About 7 kcal per gram of alcohol; default 600 kcal per drinking session (adjust for drinks and food)
- About 3,500 kcal per pound of body fat (for-fun conversion)
- Conversions of 30 days per month, 365 days per year, and 52 weeks per year
A note on accuracy
Every Quit & Save result is an estimate based on your inputs and our published assumptions. Savings are simple multiplication, so they are accurate when your inputs are accurate, but they exclude extras like lighters and snacks, health and insurance savings, and savings/investment returns. The calorie and weight conversions for quitting drinking are not medical advice, so discuss your health and quit methods with a medical professional or an official organization.
Where to get help
If quitting is hard, contact a cessation clinic, a quitline such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW, or Smokefree.gov.
